About

Andrea Woody is Divisional Dean of Social Sciences and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Washington. She is adjunct faculty in the departments of Dance; History; and Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies, and served as Chair of the Department of Philosophy from 2016 to 2022. Her research interests include philosophy of science, history of science, and philosophy of art.

Alongside her faculty role, Andrea has served in a variety of professional academic positions including Editor-in-Chief of Philosophy of Science, Associate Editor of Historical Studies in the Natural Sciences, on the Editorial Board of Foundations of Chemistry, and on the organizing committee of the Society for the Philosophy of Science in Practice (SPSP). Andrea is deeply grateful for the opportunities she has had to study across the sciences, humanities, and arts. She received her bachelor's degree, in chemistry, and certification in Theater and Dance, from Princeton and her doctorate, in history & philosophy of science, from the University of Pittsburgh. In between, she taught physics, chemistry, and dance in high school. She identifies deeply as an educator and is committed to helping sustain rich educational opportunities for people throughout the state and nation. She is honored to work with KUOW because of the crucial role public radio, and independent media more generally, play in sustaining vibrant learning ecosystems.

Originally from Virginia, Andrea has been a proud UW Husky, and Husky parent, calling Seattle home since 1998.
