After 11 seasons with OL Reign and four Women’s World Cups appearances with Team USA, Megan Rapinoe is suiting up to play her final game at Lumen Field Friday night.

The Reign are billing the match against the Washington Spirit as “Forever Reign: A Celebration of Megan Rapinoe.”

But, Rapinoe’s focus is split. She told reporters that she’s dealing with competing emotions. She’s trying to take it all in, while helping the Reign win their first league championship.

“It’s really the script everybody wants, myself included. There’s obviously one thing that’s sort of eluded us here,” Rapinoe said. “I would love to be in the playoffs, continue to play those meaningful games — that’s the whole point of all of this.”

The Reign are currently in 6th place in the National Women’s Soccer League standings, which would qualify them for the playoffs, with two games left to play.

Thursday, head coach Laura Harvey got emotional while reflecting on Rapinoe’s decade-long presence with the club.

“We were always trying to fight for more, and I think we always knew that the most powerful voice in the room was ‘Pinoe,” Harvey said. “The thing that I always loved is that she never shied away from that. She was always willing to put herself in front of all the bullets that everyone was willing to throw at her.”

Friday’s match kicks off at 5 p.m., and it’ll be packed. The team is attempting to break the all-time attendance record for the National Women’s Soccer League, and already have 31,000 tickets sold as of Thursday.

Rapinoe’s final regular season game with the Reign will come on the road against the Chicago Red Stars on Sunday, Oct. 15.
