The Northwest festival season really gets underway in June, and this weekend revelers have their choice of celebratory gatherings. KUOW’s Arts and Culture reporter Marcie Sillman has a list of some of the weekend’s cultural events.
Friday, June 14
Celebrate Juneteenth, the commemoration of the 1865 emancipation of African American slaves at Seattle’s Yesler Community Center.
Saturday, June 15
Juneteenth commemorations continue at Pratt Park in Seattle’s Central Area.
Edmonds Arts Festival, free festival featuring visual and performing arts, food and hands-on children’s activities.
Orca Day at Cape Disappointment State Park, Long Beach Peninsula.
Northwest Girlchoir concert, "Journeys," at Benaroya Hall, 2 p.m. Featuring an illustrated reading of “Killer Whale Eyes,” by Sondra Segundo-Cunningham, plus a performance in Haida.
Saturday-Sunday, June 15-16
Festival Sundiata, celebrating Black arts, at Seattle Center. Opening ceremonies at noon at the Mural Amphitheatre.
Marysville’s annual Strawberry Festival continues with a carnival, performances and an open air market.
Through June 29
Seattle Repertory Theatre presents “Tiny Beautiful Things,” a stage adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s book.
