We

celebrate the solstice this weekend; in the Pacific Northwest that means hours of daylight, outdoor activities and the legendary Fremont Fair and Solstice Parade. KUOW’s Arts and Culture reporter Marcie Sillman rounded up a few other suggestions for your summer enjoyment.


Friday, June 21

Public dedication of a large-scale indigenous art installation, “Brings the Medicine Sundial”. This temporary work outside the King Street Station in Seattle is part of a year-long city-wide celebration of Native American art. Public festivities noon-3 p.m.

Seattle Men’s Chorus performs “Summer of ‘69” at Benaroya Hall, with a second performance Saturday afternoon. The chorus commemorates the walk on the moon, the Stonewall uprising that ushered in the modern gay liberation movement, among other events of 50 years ago. Saturday’s matinee will be followed by a post-show q and a, moderated by Marcie Sillman. Friday's performance, 8 p.m.; Saturday's performance, 2 p.m.

Saturday, June 22

Fremont Solstice Parade, 1 p.m. The parade starts at Leary Way NW and NW 39th Street, ending at Gas Works Park.

Fremont Fair Saturday 10 a.m.-Sunday 6 p.m. Includes artisan crafts, food and music stages

Taste of Tacoma, Point Defiance Park. Admission is free. Shuttle service from Tacoma Community College. Saturday 11a.m.–9p.m.; Sunday 11a.m.–8p.m.

Local writers celebrate Beat-era poet Allen Ginsberg at Seattle’s Volunteer Park, 2-4 p.m. Sponsored by Hugo House and Western Bridge.

Spoked to Ride, 12-mile family friendly bicycle ride begins at Remlinger Farms in Carnation. Benefit for children’s education projects in Africa. Registration 9:30 a.m.; ride: 10:15 a.m.

Sunday, June 23

Fremont Fair continues with the annual Dog Parade, 2:30 p.m.
