Time Is Running Out To Get A Health Insurance Plan
The clock is ticking for you to get health insurance coverage for 2016: You've got until the end of January, state officials say.
And remember: Not being covered will be expensive. The penalty is $695 per adult or up to 2.5 percent of the person’s income, whichever is greater.
Thirteen insurers are selling a total of 148 plans through the Washington Healthplanfinder, the state’s online market for health coverage.
It’s natural to compare monthly premiums and yearly deductibles when shopping. But there are other things to consider, says Stephanie Marquis, spokesperson for the state Office of the Insurance Commissioner.
“If your deductible is too high and you have serious medical needs, you may be paying more out of pocket before your coverage kicks in,” said Marquis. And make sure your plan includes the providers you want, she added.
In fact, deductibles can range from $500 to $6,500, depending on the plan. Some plans have separate deductibles for prescription drugs.
Returning customers can expect a major change from the health exchange — the payment system. In previous years, payment went through the exchange, which caused technical glitches. This time, customers will pay carriers directly.
