Welcome KUOW's Fall 2013 RadioActive Youth Producers

KUOW's RadioActive Youth Media is proud to offer a fall journalism workshop in West Seattle, in partnership with Neighborhood House - High Point, a center for anti-poverty community services. Six students, age 16-19, will spend ten weeks learning what it means to be a journalist. During that time, they will pitch, interview, edit and write their own feature stories for KUOW.org

Hassan Abdi, Junior, Foster High School

I am an abstract thinker and concrete analyst. I pursue and seek. I seek to the point where I have rendered the door that is my life ajar. I explore and venture. I seek the vantage point of the highest precipice — one that liberates me of obscurity and obstruction, one that gives a panorama view of my surroundings. I have traversed the world and encountered peculiar manifestations, a peregrination and fleet that has proven timely. At this moment in time I am a pupil, a mere student of knowledge. I aspire.

Estefania Chirino Perez, Junior, Health Sciences and Human Services High School

I am 16 years old. I joined RadioActive because a teacher at my school recommended it and it sounded really interesting to me. I really hope to learn more about radio journalism.

Sophie Ding, Senior, Shorecrest High School

I’ve worked in print, web, and TV throughout all of high school. I’m excited about finally getting experience in radio! Besides listening to the radio every day, my other hobbies include dance, music, costuming and tons of reading. I love learning about others’ ideas and I hope someone will enjoy learning about the information I share too.

Ardo Hersi, Senior, Foster High School

Ardo’s the name, and making a change is my game — one story at a time! I’m an ambitious and determined person who’s passionate about journalism. In my free time I’m always reading. I'm 17 years old and attend Foster High School. I’m really involved. I’m in Interact, speech and debate, and environmental clubs to name a few. I’m a lifelong learner and always looking to have an adventure.

Iman Mohamed, Senior, West Seattle High School

I’m that quiet person who expresses everything by writing. My only getaway is spoken word and written poems and music: from Beyoncé to Lil Wayne, Jason Mraz to cultural music. Different, I know. Journalism has always been there in the back of my head, but I was afraid of putting myself out there. To escape this world, I read, listen to spoken word, watch non-fiction movies and listen to my favorite music. Do I sound confusing and weird? Then you are reading about the right person.

Chris Otey, Senior, Middle College High School

I like to stay involved with my community. I am usually pretty good with time management. I write fairly good stories. I can be stubborn, but not usually. I am almost always positive and helpful. Overall I’m looking forward to learning.
