Welcome KUOW's Fall 2014 RadioActive Youth Producers
KUOW's RadioActive Youth Media is proud to offer a fall journalism workshop at the Tukwila Community Center, in partnership with the City of Tukwila Parks & Recreation.
Six students, age 16-18, will spend 11 weeks learning what it means to be a journalist. During that time, they will pitch, interview, edit and write their own feature stories for KUOW.org.
Amran Aden, Senior, Foster High School
I am a helpful person, hardworking in school. I love to read. I want to be a pharmacist or a nurse in my career. Therefore I want to go back to my country and help them. Also I want to work toward a solution to providing my community here, as well as in my country, with the resources they need to reverse the inequality in human rights and human dignity that they feel on a daily basis.
Nathan Boss, Sophomore, Highline Big Picture High School
I grew up listening to people tell stories. Whether it was some wild fable my father had made up on the spot, a book being read to me or my grandfather telling some folk tale or another, I’ve always loved stories and the feeling of being drawn into them. What I want more than anything is someday to be able to share stories of my own, whether that be through journalism, fiction writing or game development.
Noel Gasca, Junior, Lake Stevens High School
When I’m not in my journalism classroom, working on the latest issue of the Valhalla (our high school newspaper), or in the ASB office brainstorming ideas for the next assembly, you can find me at home curled up on the couch watching an Audrey Hepburn film or the latest episode of Game of Thrones. Traveling is my biggest passion and, so far I have been to ten different countries. I’d like to visit every country one day and collect people’s stories as I go.

I grew up never feeling like I had a strength in anything, until I was recognized in my Language Arts classes throughout middle school and high school. I knew I had found something: writing.
Azeb Tuji, Senior, Foster High School
Ever since my parents’ divorce when I was eight, going to the theater with my dad has always been our tradition. It was a way for us to be around each other without the pressure of having to talk, because neither of us were good at that. Ever since then I’ve valued movies and the effect they can have on others. To be able to let people take a look inside your brain is an amazing thing. I’m a strong advocate for social equality and equity, and I’ve always found film to be an amazing platform to start with.
Jaylen Wheeler, Senior, University Prep
In my life I have experienced many things, one of these being journalism. I attend University Prep and I am 17 years old. I am a very ambitious and goal driven person. These qualities have led me here, to RadioActive’s program. Plenty of life to learn from and a lot of great things coming in my future.
