Before she became well-known for her memoir “Wild,” the writer Cheryl Strayed tried her hand as an unpaid, anonymous advice columnist known as Sugar.

The highly personal guidance she gave was genuine, sometimes raw and mirrored in the intensely personal messages she received. Strayed published a selection of these letters and responses in “Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar.”

The actor and producer Nia Vardalos approached her about making that book into a play. The work premiered at The Public Theater in New York in 2017. It has been optioned for television by Reese Witherspoon and is on stage now at Seattle Rep.

Seattle Repertory Theatre invited Cheryl Strayed to join in this conversation with KUOW’s Marcie Sillman after a performance of “Tiny Beautiful Things” on June 5.
