Acid Bomb At Redmond Elementary School Injures Two Adults

The King County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after a bottle exploded in a Redmond elementary school parking lot, injuring two bus drivers.

The 2-liter plastic bottle exploded just after 7:30 this morning at Emily Dickinson Elementary School.

No students were injured in the blast, which occurred more than an hour before classes began.

Bomb deputies from the King County Sheriff's Department said it was an acid bomb and that it was not a sophisticated device.

Lake Washington School District spokeswoman Kathryn Reith said it’s unclear why the device was left in the lot. “There were no threats, no warnings. Nothing that would have indicated something was going to happen,” Reith said.

Two bus drivers on a layover in the parking lot. One was injured by shrapnel from the bottle. The second was taken to the hospital as a precaution for exposure to chemicals from the acid bomb.

The school was closed for the day. Both the elementary school and Evergreen Middle School next door were swept by the Sheriff Department's bomb squad. No other explosive devices were found.
