Capitol Hill Pride Festival joins international march
The three-day Capitol Hill Pride Festival kicks off this weekend. However, organizers expressed frustration in not receiving all the city permits they requested for the event.
Capitol Hill is historically the home of the gay community in Seattle. And at 2017’s Capitol Hill Pride Festival participants will be demonstrating in two marches.
The one on Sunday is an international event called the Equality March for Unity and Pride.
Charlette LeFevre is the festival’s director. “Just to give you an idea, it’s the Pride version of the Women’s March,” LeFevre said.
The Equality March is a grassroots movement where LGBTQ+ communities can peacefully address their concerns about current political landscapes.
LeFevre said Capitol Hill’s festival moved to a sooner date to specifically take part in it. But, she said, despite requesting a permit for the march in January she never got one.
“It’s just incredibly frustrating for us,” she said. “It’s literally to the point of we’re going to have a community march and rally, permit or not.”
This march is not to be confused with another Pride event happening in downtown Seattle June 25.
Capitol Hill Pride Festival dates are June 10, 11 and 24.
