Welcome KUOW's Fall 2015 RadioActive Youth Producers
KUOW's RadioActive Youth Media is proud to offer our fall journalism workshop at the Columbia City Library, in partnership with the Seattle Public Library.
Six teens, aged 16-18, will spend 12 weeks learning what it means to be a journalist. During that time, they'll gain the skills to create radio stories. They'll do all of the research, interviews, writing, voicing and editing to produce their own feature stories on topics of their choice.
Alexander Gallardo, Freshman, Edmonds Community College
I’ve listened to public radio for a large part of my life, and I’m interested in journalism and storytelling. My ideal friends would be retirees in southern California who appreciate the art of rubber stamping. I love the infighting and name calling in the online community of people who believe in Bigfoot.
Elarrio Guajardo, Sophomore, Big Picture High School
All my life I have grown to love stories in almost all media: movies, video games, anime, and sometimes a book. I love most media genres but mostly enjoy R-rated films and M-rated video games. Quentin Tarantino is my main inspiration, as well as Martin Scorsese and plenty of other directors that have a dark humor and language liberation. I love to talk about my viewpoints with others as well as listen to theirs, however I will also criticize viewpoints that I disagree with. One day I hope to be a director and writer (and hopefully an actor) for movies, video games and anime.
Elinor Jones Toutant, Freshman, South Seattle College
I have always had many different interests and enjoyed being involved in many different things. I am a serious athlete in the sport of track and field. I love books in all of their different forms. I love reading them and listening to audio books, too. Being involved in my community has always been something that is important to me. I enjoy coaching track at the local track team and also volunteering at the Columbia Library. English and literature are some of my favorite subjects in school. I am really interested in journalism and am excited to learn about it in its different forms.
Faisa Muse, Junior, Chief Sealth International High School
I love taking pictures, writing, and listening to stories. Photography is my passion as it builds my personality, helps me to step outside of my comfort zone and to view the world in detail. I am fascinated by the vastness of the world, the different cultures and people around the world. I am curious about things that are beyond my reach, about people who live in different countries and continents. My curiosity is a result of a unique combination of early influences and childhood experiences which have fueled my passion for learning, inside and outside of the classroom. I love to explore the world on my own, refuse to accept the obvious explanation and never settle for a superficial understanding of the world. I want to explore the world and how I see it, and that is where my love for journalism comes in.
Fallon, Senior, Big Picture High School
My life has never been easy but I love life. I love to learn and grow. I am a huge anime nerd and I want to learn psychology and I am super excited to share my story. Someday I hope to become a child psychiatrist.
Shina Williams, Junior, Rainier Beach High School
Normally I’m more of a reader than an active writer, which is why I’m more creative and imaginative, in both mind and body. Yet I love how writers always make the audience/readers fall in to their worlds of knowledge and speculation. I am curious, yet maybe a bit nosy. I can be a dreamer and an opportunist yet very open-minded to my surroundings and people. I love food and deep questions that always make me think. I wish to become a better writer and discover many more talents and dreams I never knew I could do. I love animals and art, literature, science and especially theory of knowledge.
