What these cool Seattle teens wore the first week of school

“Punk isn’t dead,” said Mariam Elbortoukaly, a sophomore at The Nova Project, an alternative Seattle high school in the Central District.

Referring to her outfit on the second day of school – which included fishnet tights: "It's sort of like setting an attitude, showing everyone who you are and establishing that. It's an art, you know, the way you dress, the way you present yourself."

Across Seattle, high schoolers explained that when you attend a big city high school, the first day or week is about making an impression.

"I mean, that's everyone's first impression. Your outfit says a lot about you," said Linnea Ernevad, a sophomore at Garfield.

Darvin Duffield, a Nova freshman, wanted her outfit to signal that “I'm not trying to conform to one genre or one look.”

"I'm pretty multi-faceted when it comes to fashion,” Duffield said.

Aaliyah Konick, a senior at Nova, said, "I have to look good or I'm not going out," Konick said. Konick wore long purple nails and a gold cuff that looked like a dog collar.
